A traveling museum that tells a century of motorcycle history
Rome – From 26th May to 1st June, this 28th edition of the Historical Reenactment of the Motogiro d’Italia will take place. Organized by Moto Club Terni L. Liberati – P. Pileri in collaboration with the Italian and International Motorcycling Federation.
The Motogiro d’Italia is widely considered to be one of the best road-based classic motorcycle events in the world and considered the “Mille Miglia” of two wheels.
As of January 2019, there are already 100 entrants from all corners of the world, riding machines that represent a history of motorcycling. This will be a ‘traveling museum’ that for six days will ride superb roads through unique landscapes, ranging from miles hairpins in the highest peaks of the Apennines to sweeping coast roads of the Adriatic Sea.
Entered to date are some unique and priceless pieces, including a 1949 Brough Superior SS100 immortalized in the film Lawrence of Arabia, a 1929 1000 cc Indian Scout, and a 1937 500 Rudge Ulster, all ridden by our English enthusiast.And of course, there are many makes and model bikes that represents the history of Italian motorcycling many of which participated in the tough Motogiros that took place from 1953 to 1957. These include: MV Agusta, Mondial, Morini, Benelli, Gilera, Bianchi, Guzzi and of course Ducati, the last two of which are still in production and the Companies are Technical Sponsors of this event.
In the race, in addition the many fans and collectors taking part in this event, are two great names of motorcycling racing from the 1970/80’s – World Champions Pierpaolo Bianchi and Carlos Lavado. Come ride with them!
This timed,road based trial event is divided into six daily stages, with a regularity timed format, mandatory route check points and special time trials sections, measured down to 100th of second – all of which contribute to the entrants final score.
Riders will set off from Rome on May 26th, after traveling more than950 miles, will return there to cheering crowds on June 1st. The stopover locations through the event are Roccaraso in the heart of the Abruzzo National Park, Montesilvano Marina, a well-known seaside resort and Terni, home of the organizer’s club. You can enter one of the seven categories: Heritage for solo motorcycles and sidecars outfits built from 1914 up to 1949 of any make and displacements; Historical (Rievocazione Storica) for sport machines replicating bikes that would have taken part in the original Motogiro, of up to 175 cc from 1949 up to 1958; Vintage for motorcycles and sidecars of any displacement built from 1959 up to 1968; Classic motorcycles and sidecars of any displacement built from 1970 up to 1980; Motogiro d’Italia a category for motorcycles of any displacement built from 1981 up today and Cafè Racer for bikes that have been modified or customized of any displacement built from 1960 up today and finally, the Tourist class for all enthusiasts who want to follow the route and experience the format of this World Class event, without actually being ranked in it.Of special interest, and for the first time this year Classic Cars will be allowed to take part in the event, even though they are not officially included in the actual classifications, they will travel the same route as the bikes and use the same race formula.
